Well its Christmas Eve. Tradition in our house has always been a buffet with a ham cooked earlier in the day and sausage rolls.
But this year we intend to have our buffet on Boxing day, so im stuck and cant decide what to do for tea/dinner this Christmas Eve.
Ive looked on the internet and apparently fish is a good idea, whilst others have takeaways and curry.
So whats tradition in your house??

  • It was a buffet and mulled wine, but this year we are going with takeaway pizzas. And mulled wine.
  • Ham, egg & chips for us.

We started this tradition mostly because we found we were purely cooking up the ham on Boxing Day morn to let it go cold in time for a lunch of leftover turkey and cold meats. Seemed a bit of a waste of time and electric, so now we cook it up and eat some of it on Xmas Eve instead. The chips and egg with it make a tasty change from all the usual Xmas fare and it also avoids having loads of cold meat to use up in between Xmas and New Year.

Maybe you could plan something with any meats that you may be serving at your buffet too?

We don't have a tradition, but for us it will be freshly caught cod from 2 locations. The fella went out yesterday fishing in that wind and rain, so I've decided he's allowed to stay for dinner :)

We are having pasta and sauce and eton mess as chosen by our DD :D that will be supplemented with crisps and dips over the course of the evening.

Boxing day is when we tend to have a traditional meal of steak pie.

  • We've always had hot roast pork and stuffing sandwiches from when I was a child, so it's something I've carried on with my family
  • Roast beef and all the trimmings for us followed by vienetta ice cream. This is our tradition and is almost as nice as Christmas dinner.
  • We are having pizza as it's quick and easy

We don't have a tradition for Christmas Eve, just whatever we happen to fancy. I'm working for the first time this year having just moved to a job out of education, so it will be whatever OH pulls out the freezer or finds yellow stickered in the supermarket...

I'd say go with something fairly light and healthy - you will be cooking and eating enough heavy food over the next few days. A soup is perfect for this time of year, or perhaps something like quiche & salad, or mezze type nibbles & dips with a warm fresh loaf?
