What to wear to interview?

Hi all, just a quick question.
I have an interview in the New Year for an admin job with the NHS. I last had an interview five years ago when I was four stone heavier and a size 24 and I had lots of smart clothes. I'm now a size 16-18 and have very few clothes full stop so just wanted an opinion really. I have a long-line shirt I've just got which is white with narrow pinstripes and a tie belt, I also have a chunky black wrap cardigan. Would this be ok with some black trousers? (I realise I would have to buy some which isn't a problem- they can be had in Primark for a few quid) also, shoes wise- I have a pair of chunky black lace ups which are smart and clean- would they be ok? I can't wear heels because of my disability and whatever I wear will need to be trousers as I have tattoos on the bottom of both my legs and my feet which will need to be covered obviously.
I have some money which I don't mind spending but I don't have loads of it and would prefer to keep the cost down if possible.
Thanks in advance :)

Could you get a jacket to go with the trousers and top? A cardi (much as I love them) is more casual than professional.
  • Matalan and primark good for smart trs and jkts and not too expensive

Easy, I recently had an interview with NHS and got the job. I wore a blouse similar to THIS but it was blue satin with swallows on it from tkmaxx and was cheap and a pair of black trousers from Primark. Don't wear the cardi IMO. This way you are presentable but not too formal. I also wore flat shoes. Good luck

Have a look in Next too as I am sure the sale starts on Boxing Day or online I think on Xmas Day at 3pm - so I have heard.

Cardi is a no no but the very best of luck Mrs_Ryan

good luck and well done on dropping the weight as well.
    Not an easy task.
  • I agree don't wear the cardi. I'd say a suit would be better if you can afford one, Matalan would probably have one for not too much money, as would Asda/Tesco. Otherwise a smart shirt and trousers with a jacket, and make sure your shoes are properly polished.

Best of luck, and well done for losing all that weight!

Well done for losing the weight, I bet you feel great!

I got a fab Next suit (blazer and trousers) from a charity shop last month for less than a tenner. It's definitely worth having a look! Also be aware some charity shops separate 2 part suits - like the shop I bought mine from did - for some reason, so you might find the matching trousers if you see a blazer you like, for example.

Also don't write off skirts - opaque black tights would cover any tattoos. I bought some in Primark a few weeks ago, 80 denier with tummy holding in technology (LOL), didn't expect much of them but they're really lovely quality and truly opaque.

    Good luck with the interview!
