To cook the turkey in?
I've chosen this year to make things run more smoothly so I can relax with hubby, guests and our boys to cook our turkey crown in my large sc with a glass of white wine, rosemary and garlic then transfer to the oven to crisp up.
As last year I used the same ingredients it tasted lovely not as moist as I had hoped but almost and was forever running backwards and forwards blooming basting it and tired myself out lol
Hopefully this way the turkey will keep nice and moist ( i hate dry turkey)
Here is the recipe

Do you think this is a good idea? And is anyone else doing this?
I'm also doing a leg of lamb in my other sc, so we have a back up lol

I've done whole chickens in mine and they do come out lovely and moist, so should be lovely meat. Only down side is that you don't get lovely brown crispy skin - you get flabby white yukky skin instead.

We're cooking turkey in slow cooker and Crisping it in the oven afterwards-mainly because there isn't enough room in the oven for 2 birds and ll the roasts.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

My turkey wouldn't fit in my slow cooker. I'll be using it for cooking the gammon tomorrow and then probably freezing the stock as I doubt I'll have time to make soup anytime soon.
2 of us having gammon, dauphinoise potatoes and veg for supper Christmas Eve the rest cold for Christmas night or when anyone wants it.
P.S. Went to a party yesterday and SIL had used her SC (and 2 borrowed) to make curry, chilli and a chicken casserole and keep them all warm. Then just needed to do rice. Everyone helped themselves and any leftovers she can freeze into meal portions. Great idea.0 -
Thanks everyone!
Yes I too shall be doing gammon in the large one tomorrow aka cola ham, then serving the rest Boxing Day with my buffet and anything leftover from the gammon will go in a pie along with leftover turkey.
I do a roast in my sc every weekend then finish it off in the oven, that's what gave me the idea and also free up sometime on Xmas day to spend more time with my kids instead of being in the kitchen for most of it like last year.:(Ds2 born 3/4/12 8lbs 8.5:j

What I do is prepare everything tomorrow (veg and stuffing). Pigs in blankets are already in freezer so they'll need to come out. I get up to put turkey on about 7.00 a.m. then go back to bed (children grown up;)) I'll lay the table early (well earlyish about 11) and put plates/dishes in top oven to warm. Then I use a timetable of what time everything needs to go on/in/out of oven. I use the kitchen timer to 'call' me and the rest of the time I sit with family enjoying my champagne. The only time I stay in the kitchen is the last 30 minutes or so when greens are cooking and to help put everything in serving dishes. We eat about 2/3p.m.0 -
I prepd most stuff two weeks ago and put in mil's freezer.
Pigs in blankets
Hm pork stuffing balls
Aunt Bessie's home Yorkshire puddings the ones you cook in the tins
Brussels
Parsnips
Carrots
Frozen mash
Frozen roast potatoes
Peas
So hardly any cutting and chopping to do on the day.
This year I was determind to make it as relaxed as possible.Ds2 born 3/4/12 8lbs 8.5:j

I know a lot of people use the S/C to re-heat the Christmas pudding, keeps it nice and hot for hours.0

Having cooked a large lump of beef in the S C last week and loved it, we are going to cook a 2.5K turkey crown in it for Christmas lunch.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

I did a turkey crown in the slow cooker a couple of years ago when the only "oven" I had was the combi setting on my microwave (used for the potatoes). I didn't use the recipe you linked but it was the worst, driest turkey I've ever eaten - and I've had some pretty bad stuff at mass-catered dinners! We concluded that it was because the bird doesn't have the fat to melt through it like a chicken does. So make sure it is well basted if you're going to try it - I notice the recipe had a healthy amount of butter so hopefully you'll be OK.
I planned to do lamb in the slow cooker and turkey in the oven. Until I was enticed by the half-price on the whole legs of lamb at sainsbugs. Very MSE on the value-for-money front but sadly my SC is too small to take a whole leg! Luckily I've found a way to rearrange the shelves to fit it all in - the bird just has to go in the SC to stay warm while it rests while I do all the trimmings!0 -
Not for the turkey, but I've got braised red cabbage in the SC right now, and will cook a smoked gammon in it tomorrow. Also when the cabbage comes out I'll make some giblet stock.
Tomorrow we will be mostly guzzling prosecco but in previous years we've kept the mulled wine warm in the SC, it keeps it at the perfect temperature.0
