2nd post updated now with new challengers and those I missed.

clingingtothewreckage, only calculate what you are left with after fees, and postage, as this is actual money earnt that you can use towards debt/savings/holiday/everyday living etc.

Thanks Aesop - it seems obvious now that it should be net because that is the extra I will actually have.:)

  • Good luck xx

The way I work out what I'll have after fees is to add together the price the item went for, plus the postage, then deduct 15 per cent of that whole, from the price it went for, as far as I know this then covers the ebay and paypal fees, I hope someone will be along to correct me if this is wrong.

The tax thing is interesting -- I have been adding gross figures for mystery shopping, without taking into account the tax that I will have to pay when the time comes. But I also have expenses such as mileage and (today for the first time) parking, so I need to get to grips with that and work out what to do, I think it would be better for me to reduce the amount I record for mystery shopping by 15 per cent (as I am a 20 per cent tax payer and have to factor in expenses.) I have only been doing it since November so it's not a massive sum to take off, I also need to get clear in my head how payments are taxable/expense claimable depending on whether they are actual fees for the job or reimbursements. There is a lot of good advice on this and discussion on the Mystery Shopping thread in the boost your income part of these forums.

When it comes to my mileage claims through work, which pay me 45p a mile, I have been counting these as non taxable.

I just had to pay a tax amount in January, and wasn't best pleased, will be more aware of what's coming this time next year.

Thank you for the advise on ebay sales. I don't actually anticipate a large amount of sales so if I am a little out either way it won't really matter but I am going to following your formula.

I believe that you are correct in counting your mileage of 45p a mile as non taxable. At the moment I am paid at a higher rate so I am liable for tax on mileage. I am however about to have my mileage rate reduced to 45p which will not be taxable (so I have been told by work.)

Going off to work on my signature. Thanks again :)

    Well done. A great total
  • Hi guys,

Thanks Aesop for the inspiration :)
and everyone else for the cheerleading:T

    Here are the months totals...
    Guests £260
    Xmas Cheque £20
Ebay £20 after postage and fees etc

    So currently#92 at £300/£310.

I have some items on Ebay finishing tomorrow which have sold which will take me over the £10 remaining :):):)

Thanks to the thread I've said yes to guests when I really didn't feel like it, have discovered Ebay, Amazon Trade in, etc and have negotiated extra paid hours at work. I wouldnt have done all of those things simultaneously without you guys inspiration, so thanks.

I also have a guest staying the last few days of January but whose £ will get to me technically in Feb, and the same with some overtime that I did. So I've decided not to count these here, but to up my expectations for Feb to £20/day so I don't slow down! If thats ok...I will pop over to the new thread and check in. See you there!!
