Boiler/thermostat horror

Just for those looking for new boilers.
I had a valliant Combi installed with a salus thermostat with remote unit one year ago. Lovely in every way until :
The remote stopped working. Replaced batteries. Dead, pushing up Daisies, pining for the fjords, flat on its' back
Called Valliant who said there was no way the bioler could be coaxed to do the heating without the thermo.
Called Salus who said "You'll have to contact the installer". Explained he was away and lives 80 miles away. Despite it being in warranty they could do absolutely nothing. Couldn't even offer to sell me one.
As it happens our new local plumber/gas is going to fit a new thermo (not a salus I may add). But I was lucky it didn't happen Christmas Eve
So if you're buying ask if the boiler will work without the thermo. Or if the remote even runs out of batteries that the heating remains on.
Imagine an old person drops their thermo, perhaps runs over it with their wheel chair. And freezes to death. Perhaps the designers might like to think about that over their christmas turkey.
Happy Christmas one and all

Russ you'd think there must be a way but Valliant technical support were 100% it couldn't be done. And I guess one would need to beware loss of warranty.
But surely it is not beyond the human brain for the designers to work around this. The boiler has a clock and temperature controls so it would cost next to nothing. And you can get it to run for 30 seconds or so in sweeps mode so just allow that to run at a constant temp. Simply thoughtless lazy design.
Imagine if the TV didn't work because the remote was broken? Just before the kick off between fav team and big enemy team :rotfl:I believe past performance is a good guide to future performance :beer:0 -
Which model is it ??Perfection takes time: don't expect miracles in a day

I have a Vaillant boiler controlled by a remote thermostat. However, when i first bought the house, there was a simple thermostat on the wall. When that failed, it was replaced with a remote one which has worked fine since but I imagine it would be possible to return to a wall thermostat.0

Yeah you can just short out the thermostat connection in the boiler, it will run continuously then, just set your thermostatic valves correctly and turn the boiler on and off at the mains until it is fixed.0

Technical support were just covering themselves in case someone does a DIY bodge... I'm sure we can all think of several people we would never want to see trying to short connections on a gas boiler.
Having said that, making the boiler fire up is a trivial operation; Google (and the tips above) will show how it's done. Fitting a new thermostat is an easy DIY job; any handyman should be able to do it if the home-owner cannot.0 -
The receiver unit on my Digistat has an override button which fires the boiler until its own C/H thermostat reaches temp.Imagine an old person drops their thermo
Can't even imagine a handheld remote...what's wrong with a wall mounted unit?0 -
I'm currently having quotations for a new system and asked one engineer if there was an alternative, as with tvs, pvrs, etc., should the remote fail to work. He said there wasn't, so I'm going for the 'old' method.0

Ours is handheld. Very useful when you want one area warmed to a temp, but not the rest of the house.0
