Retailer no longer trading- what now?

I bought an LG tv from AJelectronics (website) in Feb 2012 for £1500 ( a good price at the time) The tv has started to have problems with the picture over the past week, so I tried to contact the retailer to get them to repair etc even though the warranty is only 1 year. I now find out that they went into administration earlier this year. I contacted LG who have basically said its not their problem and that the SOGA is an agreement between me and the retailer and nothing to do with the manufacturer.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

    How did you pay?
  • Did you by any chance pay on a credit card or other form of credit?
  • If you paid with some form of credit (even if only a small amount) then the credit supplier are jointly and severally liable under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act so you can use the Sale of Goods Act against them. They will almost certainly require you to prove the fault is inherent though.

If you paid by any other means then unfortunately you're on your own.

if you paid by credit card then the card company are jointly responsible for the TV under SoG if the TV fails the quality/durability test.

Whether lasting almost three years is going to fail the durability test I'm less sure, if it was like my £150 Tesco special then I'd say not, for a £1500 TV I'd say it was reasonable for it to last more than 3 years
  • For £1500 I would definitely be expecting longer than 3 years :)

You are probably out of luck then, you cant use Section 75. You'll have to get it repaired yourself.

I'd be surprised if LG would refuse to let you pay for a repair (although I know you were hoping to avoid doing that).

Call LG and ask them for the number of local authorised repairers.

You are on your own with this so you need to find a decent repair shop.
