I read the posts & agree with the OP, this is a scam! This happened to my brother too! When buying House insurance they gave him free AA Breakdown cover, he has a Brand New company car, with company AA cover & manufacturers breakdown cover. They set up a direct debit for this cover that wasnt asked for. I welcome a return to a system where a signature is required for a DD or at least a letter from the bank when a new DD is set up, like happened a few years ago.0

How can it be a scam if you opt into having it?! The fact they haven't read through an online quote properly and just hit next perhaps?!0 -
They are giving you something that you haven't asked for & then try to recoup money for the unsolicited product. You might not agree, but I don't like this type of business practice. No different to mobile companies adding insurance to mobile contracts & credit card companies adding PPI to CC bills, both of which I've had happen to me.0

I see why you were annoyed but while reading your posts I picture someone who is a right drama queen and is looking for attention. I had a similar problem with another company, free life insurance or something like that for 6 months, I saw £4 come off on the 7th + 8th month which I had forgotten about by then called up, found out what I was getting charged for, thought DOH! OK can I cancel. In the end I was £8 out of pocket because I had never intended to pay for out. Lesson learned, noone died, I hadn't been caused any undue stress and I moved on without trying to drag the company in question through the dirt.
I DID NOT WANT IT!!!! i told them online and via phone,yet they still added it.PROFIT is the reason,they rely on you forgetting it,or go,oh well,its only 86 pounds!!!ALL I wanted was home insurance...NOTHING more.Is a scam,no more,no less.0 -

Thank-you!! That is it in a nutshell.0 -
Was the £12 charge for the breakdown cover you didn't want, or the non-cancellation of your home insurance in advance of the auto-renewal?I am a mortgage broker.
