A few years ago i wanted to run an OS within my OS & was told to get VMWare Player instead of MS Virtual PC that i was using at the time.
Did this & it was brilliant.
I recently formatted my PC & went to download VMWare Player again. It's turned out to be nothing like what it was. I don't even know how to use it now.
What's a decent Virtual Machine program these days that's actually easy to use?

The entire interface is different.frugal_mike wrote: »I'm running Ubuntu in VMWare player for browsing the internet with and it seems basically the same as I remember it being for years. What is it that you don't know how to do?
I don't even know where to begin. The version i had a few years ago was very simple.0 -
VMWare Player interface is now a lot more like VMWare Server.0

I guess maybe using VMWare at work just meant I didn't notice the changes.0

Rule 1 is always have local copies of the original version's downloaded program installer/zip file.
I can think of many programs where the 'improved' recent version works worse than the original simple version.
Often trying to find copies of earlier versions on the web is next to nigh impossible.0 -
Install Virtual machine .
Open virtual machine and run .
I see no problems over older versions .0 -
I use VMware Player daily, and I find it quite straightforward; I run Ubuntu Linux, Red Hat Linux, CentOS Linux, Windows 7/8/XP/server/ME, and Solaris "guest" VMs. A cool feature of VMware Player is that it is also available for Linux and the VMs are compatible, so you can have Windows or Linux as the OS of the "host" computer.
Alternatives are Oracle (nee Sun) VirtualBox, which I found a bit complicated and OTT with system services, and Microsoft's Hyper-V (included in some Windows 8 versions).
The thing to note about the VMs is that they are really like a separate computer implemented in software (that's what "virtual" means), and so you have to acquire and install the OS onto them, which may require a separate licence.0 -
I've never used VMWare Player but try:
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/vmware-player/
They've got every version right back to 1.0.3 (current version is 5.0.1).0 -
Hmm i don't know what i downloaded originally but i've just downloaded player from the official wbesite again & it's the interface as normal.0
