I would never buy a property close to main road, id want a bit of peace in the garden, also I love my windows open , but wouldnt fancy sleeping with polution or hearing traffic noise in the house ..........Then if you ever decide to sell it would also put buyers off..........

I probably wouldn't want to buy it. I recently viewed a really nice bungalow with a lovely garden. There was another row of houses between it and a main road and I could hear the traffic noise from the garden. It put me off-what's the point of having a lovely garden if it's unpleasant to sit out there?
  • We viewed a beautiful house, all boxes ticked until the EA opened the back door to the garden....the noise was so bad I made up my mind there and then, we thanked the EA for his time and left. It didn't matter how lovely the house was, the garden was unusable as it was so noisy, and to me both have to be 'right' as you are purchasing both house and garden. OP, you have concerns, if you buy it and then sell up at a later date prospective buyers will also have concerns. Think very carefully about this.....

How long has it been on the market? Do other house on the street sell and do they site there for a year or do they sell nearly as quick as normal on average? If sales happen and the house is priced reasonably then there's enough people who want the space but can't afford it without a compromise like that. So you need to see the place and decide whether you like the house and is that a compromise you can live with, as it's a personal choice. I'm buying a house in a nice residential road with an off license and corner shop opposite. My mum said she couldn't live with that, but while I'd rather be further down the road I don't think it will bother me that much. It was much more important to me to have an extended house with off-street parking. Everyone's different and pricing it correctly will usually find a buyer.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

I would be interested in knowing how I go about finding out how long the house has been for sale and also how long recent sold houses took to sell. How do I find this information?

    Thanks again
  • You might find the info on Zoopla.
  • Bear in mind that the noise will be far worse in the summer, when more people are driving around with windows open so you can hear their music. When we lived on a main road that was the thing that drove me nuts.
