This thread pretty much sums this country up

I made a mistake and ruined my car, can I now claim against the company that I called to help.

How do you know the engine is permanently damaged? Has the garage diagnosed this, or is it just your assumption? Putting petrol in a diesel may well damage the injector pump, but it won't wreck the engine unless you are very unlucky. It's just massively inconvenient.

The RAC will tell you take a hike. The only time I have called them out in 10 years was when I put petrol in my diesel car and ran it until it stopped 6 miles later. I asked for the Recovery service to take me home, and they were very clear that misfuelling is classed as driver error, and the most they would do would be to transport the car to the nearest garage. I doubt if they will entertain giving you a new engine, and nor should they.

I did probably the worst thing - fill up and then drive until it stopped, which ensures that the petrol is in every part of the fuel system. It took the garage a couple of hours to flush it out, it cost me £200 and a new tank of diesel, and the car has been fine ever since, so don't assume the worst.

The worst bit is feeling a total idiot and having your man card torn up by a spotty youth in front of your eyes.

Sue the RAC for failing to train their operative.

On attending any breakdown, the first question to ask is :

"What was the last thing that you did before this happened?"

(I have found from experience that asking that can save you hours of fault finding)

Unless of course he did ask, and wasn't told.........
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

...or the last thing they did was not the refuel.
Perhaps the car was refuelled 2 days previously, or they may have parked somewhere before the car ground to a halt. We don't know and I doubt the OP wants to tell us.

I know of someone who accidentally put some petrol in a diesel car. After about half an hour of driving they thought the engine sounded rough. Shortly after that they worked out what the problem was and drove to the nearest garage to fill up. Brimmed it with diesel, took it to a garage the next day for a check and the car was OK, but was advised to keep the tank as full as possible so that the petrol got diluted down.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

the permanent damage that he caused my engine (by trying to start it), would I be able to claim from RAC for a new engine?
