A recent episode of Phil Spencer's Secret Agent had a house where an old couple had put it up throughout the hall, kitchen and master bedroom only 15 years ago just because they liked it.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

When you own a property but do not have unlimited funds you tend to leave things that are functioning fine even if they are not necessarily fashionable. Maybe the previous owners were happy enough to leave it as it was. Let's face it, how much time does anyone spend actually looking at their kitchen ceiling?0

We've just redone our entire 3 bedroom bungalow. Ripped it out - gutted it and redecorated throughout, including a new kitchen, bathroom and fireplace. We have a pine tongue and groove ceiling in the front vestibule though and we've left it there - because we like it and it looks good.0

OK, that's not so bad then. It just freaked me out a little as there is already some black mould in the bathroom and if they hadn't even bothered to spruce that up with a spot of bleach I was wondering what on earth they might be hiding behind a ceiling cover!
Thanks for the help, all.0 -
dh is a structural engineer, retired now and we went to look at a property to buy once, it had wooden interior walls and wooden ceilings. We walked away as dh said it could be hiding anything0

I'd suggest whitewashing it - can be a nice effect without masses of workSo many glitches, so little time...0

Could even be hiding cracks in the walls/ceiling. Speaking of artex, one time I viewed a house that had artex on the walls. It wasn't even done 'professionally',it looked like somebody had just slapped it on.0

I live in a 150 year old cottage. When I moved in it had wood panelling, and a wooden ceiling in the kitchen. I was warned it might be hiding something. You take your chances.Nice to save.0

Depends how many rooms its in though! If its just on one ceiling that would ok but if it was in lots of rooms (like the one on Phil Spencer recently) it would still be too much0
