OK - firstly that would be a strange thing to me to be top of a wishlist, but each to their own.

If it really is top of her list then will she really be happy in this house or will it get on her nerves every time she goes up the stairs?

I think she has to decide that before you proceed, even if they give you £5k (which they won't) there still won't be a window there.

I'm not sure how helpful this is. We are considering pulling out and know this is an option.

At the end of the day, a light and airy entrance and staircase is something we value.

It really does sound like an odd feature to have at the top of a wishlist.... could you change your wife for another and keep the house?

More seriously, whatever the reason for it being at the top of a wishlist, that's where it was. Unlike a feature-lacking room, a hall can't be shut from view, and altering it may be difficult. Unless there's an easy rectification see (link) for some images of light tunnels - they can be very effective & dramatic), I might well be minded to pull out.

Or swap the wife.... that does remain an option......

I have considered swapping the wife....

We have a light tunnel in our current bathroom and while not ideal I agree they are effective.

I do feel a window in the now external en-suite (albeit a much smaller window than planned for the stairs) and a light tunnel at the top of the stairs is a reasonable request.

    Thanks for your input.

A light tunnel, or a solartube as I call them, is what our builder agreed to fit. I'm writing this in case you didn't know what I meant when I wrote solartube. I think our builder changed their mind when they realised how much it was going to cost. It involved a lot of tubing because of the bends and distance involved although it was within the limits of how long solar tubes can be.

You might be right about your builder being more cooperative but you might need to prepare yourself for a very measly offer from the house builder.

I also think asking for a window in the bathroom is optimistic. House builders have a set number of house types so they don't have to individually design each house. They would need to seek planning permission for the change which will cost them time and money.

I think the most important aspect is that if you buy this house, will you or your wife constantly bemoan the fact there is no natural light to the landing, to the extent that it spoils your enjoyment of the house.

If this will be the case, look for somewhere else now, as you don't want to be moving again in 12 months' time!
