Thanks for replies. Planning on going to Tesco...opens at midnight here in Gloucestershire. Will just nip to the cashpoint before hand. Ive never used a cheque (in my 20s) and i have just cut up my credit card after paying it all off!!!! Horayyy

How times have changed - I recently changed banks and when I asked for a cheque book, I was assured that I really didn't need one. After insisting that they gave me one, I've written a total of just 2 cheques in 7 months - and if I'm honest I could have paid those two bills in cash.

That cheque book will probably outlive me!

I've written a cheque this morning for the butchers as it was COD otherwise, and as I don't have a total yet thought this a better idea! I also wrote a cheque in August for the adoption of our puppy :)

If you are at the stage where you are waiting for your wages to go in at midnight before you can go shopping for food then you seriously need to look at your budget.

I knew many don't but I hadn't realised it was quite so universal!:o
Even if the shops still accepted them, the banks withdrew the guarantee facilities needed by retailers a few years ago...

My old debit card was a combined cheque guarantee card, my new one isn't.

Cheques are still useful for birthday presents for relatives if you want to include it with the card. It's (a bit) better than a faster payment in the fact the relative actually gets something in their hand... and a lot safer than cash.

But it puts the burden on the relatives to make a special trip to the bank to pay the cheque into their account.

Or put it in the post. Perhaps include a stamped envelope along with the birthday cheque. Most people wouldn't complain about having to deal with a gift cheque from a relative. If they were that bothered about it and thought their time and effort involved outweighed the cheque value, they needed pay it in at all.

My budget is fine and i already have plenty of food....thanks for the concern though!! The reason why i am going a midnight is because you might not have noticed its xmas and shops are stupidly busy and i am avoiding the crowds!!!!! Just so happens i get paid so was waiting for wages but if they were not in the account i would have juat tried again the next night. Nothing to do woth budget all to do with the crowds!!!
