Account Closed - Pls advice - Best next steps

hi All,

the bank has closed down my a/c last week.

when I went to withdraw the balance of 1600 pounds left, bank said that they cant release the funds, that I have to write to them and proving these funds belongs to me and provide proof too.

Upon speaking to friend of mine, he has why not to put in writing exactly what had happened.

So I have prepared my letter to be sent to the bank. And i would like your opinion on this and the way to go forward in dealing with this matter constructively.

*
Around early December a company in London contacted me regarding a part-time job opportunity as financial-agent. Since I had was unemployed I thought lets 'give it a go'.

After having submitted my details and a copy of my passport sent, I got job offer within the next day. And the following a sum of some money under 2000 pounds had come into my a/c and i had to transfer it somewhere to europe through western union to someone i didn't know anything about.

Anyway further funds of about 2000 pounds came in the following day and that's where i think things got started....( I never transferred this across since i had no instructions). As i regularly use online banking, I then knew that my a/c was under review and about 3 days later the account was closed without notice.

And when i went to withdraw the money... I was told to request in writing to prove my ID and provide proof where these funds have come from..

I know... many of u might shout at me...

ok i have been stupid to be drawn into this.... but i want to clear my name... when i tried to open an a/c last week somewhere else it got turned down.

*
Thus taking my friends advice, i have drawn up a letter with all details of my recruitment and all other matters concerning this activity. So that i could meet up with someone in the bank and send these details across to team involved... so that I can clear my name and put write my credit history right.

Therefore I would appreciate your constructive thoughts on this initiative that I have planned to resolve this matter ..

Tks in advance.

Tom

  • To me you have unwittingly being money laundering.

You probably have a CIFAS marker against you making it very difficult to open a bank account.

    To me ...

    To me too.
And, it would appear, to the bank,
and the police (who will no doubt have received a report).

Assuming you still have all the relevant contact info, try Action Fraud:

    and maybe CAB.

I am afraid it is not. You are stuck with not getting a bank account now since you have - even if it was inadvertently - been involved in fraud.

Because you have also given the fraudsters your passport and other personal details, you are at high risk of identity fraud. They may already have used, or will be trying to use your data to try and open bank accounts and/or obtain credit.

There is likely to be a CIFAS marker on file for you. If, however, there is not, it would be in your interest to get a protective registration.

  • To me you have [STRIKE]un[/STRIKE]wittingly been money laundering.

I've corrected your quote for you. Bloody obvious this was dodgy.
  • Should I give all the relevant details to the bank, as advised by my friend?

Communicate with the banks fraud squad and police with their investigations. Don't expect to be able to open another other bank accounts for at least 6 months. Expect any credit request to be turned down. Expect your "recruiter" to be using your passport and other information for opening accounts in other countries and other identity theft.

Why would you not give all the relevant details to your bank, and to the police? What would you hope to achieve by hiding anything from them?

Yes and as fully as you can,as quickly as you can.
You may think it is water under the bridge but don't be surprised if the police pay you a visit.
It will be up to you to convince them that you genuinely did not know what was happening, and from the information you have provided on here you could end up under a criminal charge of aiding and abetting money laundering.
