Camera with good zoom

Hi all,
I am looking to buy a small camera with a good zoom. The main purpose is to sell small items of jewellery on Ebay. I have already invested in a portable home studio & lights.
Argos have a Nikon L27 for sale at £40, any recommendations?
Thanks,
meg.

Meg, I'm not willing to make any camera recommendations but I would question your approach. You say you want to photograph small items of jewellery so zoom is really not the way to go. You need a camera with good close-up (i.e. MACRO) performance.

Cheap point and shoot cameras can usually only perform macro with no zoom engaged at all.

    Thanks Dave,
What do I look for in terms of macro performance - how is it described as an indication of closeness and clarity?

You should be looking for a camera that can focus as close as 3 inches for true macro work on small jewellery items ... as for quality that generally varies with what you are prepared to pay.

This is a good review source and the dpreview sight is a mine of information about photography generally ... http://www.dpreview.com/camerareviews

For what it's worth, when I'm not using multi £thousand pound Nikon DSLRs, I have a little Canon Powershot A2400 IS pocket camera which takes excellent macro shots and can shoot video too. I got it for £50 in a sale. :)
