Toyota Yaris....diesel?

Options
Please excuse my ignorance.

I am due to start a new job in early Mar 14.

I will be commuting home on a friday evening and heading back to work early monday morning. The route is M42/40, then pretty fast A road. Total journey 86 miles in each direction (50ish on M-Way). I may come home every other weds night and head back early thurs.

Been looking at the yaris. 2004/54 for about £2600. 35-45000 miles on the clock.
Question is i am looking at the right car? 1.4 Diesel or 1.0/1.3 petrol?

Thoughts? Many thanks.

I was looking at the diesel models myself for a while. I don't know anyone who used one personally but they seemed to have cheap tax and get really good mpg from when i saw the stats.

The early petrol 1.0 models are really good as well though. A guy in my work has one. It's on 160,000 miles and he only bothers to do oil changes every 40k and never plugs / air filters. Mostly motorway but i still think if it was any other small car it would have died by now with lack of maintainence.

  • Hmm. I'm worried by the common issues seen with diesel cars....dpf, egr, flywheel, Injectors. Or are these only an issue on newer diesel cars or those used on mostly short stop/start journeys?

It varies on model to model. It would be like me saying i don't want a petrol car, because some of them have rattly engines.

EGR, DMF and DPF might be issues on some diesel models but not all.

I'm sure the Yaris won't have a DPF though.

Suggest you have a look on Honestjohns Car Reviews for that model, one of the best small cars ever made, a worthy replacement for the much missed Starlet.

  • We have an Auris with the same 1.4 diesel engine, 07 model with over 50k, the engine has never missed a beat and looks good for another 50k.
Plus Toyota garages seem good and no dearer than indes.
Looks good but why the low milage? has it been in an accident?

I seriously doubt a 2005 Yaris has a DPF, and it may not have a DMF either. I'd do a bit of Googling to try and find out, or try a Toyota forum (unless of course someone pops up here who knows!)

I didn't think EGR issues were a major problem to be honest, in terms of cost of fixing them anyway?

Another potential expense of modern diesels is turbo problems, but I'm guessing the 1.4D is normally aspirated so again this won't be an issue.

I doubt you'll find a diesel of this age with only 40,000 miles on the clock, but you probably wouln't want to either as such low mileage is likely to be the result of predominently short trips which isn't so good for the engine.

My sister has a petrol Yaris of this sort of age that is still going strong, but I have no specific knowledge of the diesel model.

The Yaris 1.4 diesel is a turbocharged engine.
70ish bhp if i remember and over 70mpg on a motorway run

75bhp to be precise.:) Chain driven cam too, so for longevity the oil change history is very important.
I have a 2010 (Mk2) 1.4 Diesel Yaris which has a bit more puff at 90bhp. I've yet to achieve 70mpg, motorway or otherwise but consistently achieve over 60 mpg with a mix of rural, motorway and some urban.
No dpf on the 2004 model and it's a cracking little engine. Should be ideal for the op's intended use.

    Thanks for correcting me.

Data on fuelly certainly suggest good real-world fuel economy for the diesel:

Although the person getting 80 mpg is clearly a hypermiler, with by the sounds of it a modified car (going by the notes).
  • Thanks, folks. I've seen a 3 door with 40k on the clock. 1L petrol on a 2005/54 plate. I'm gonna get a petrol one as the repair costs with a more complex diesel coupled with the higher purchase price over a petrol equivalent outway the better mpg on a run.
