                    Hi,
Looking for some black matt paint for a bedroom fireplace that will not be lit.
I got some stove paint but it needs curing by lighting the fire/stove.
Anyone recommend a product?
Thanks,
Rick

            Black Hammerite normally is ok.
You can get spray and brush on versions. Be sure to remove any flakes/rust ( if it is cast iron) and maybe give it a rub down with fine wire wool. You could even give it a wipe down with a cloth with meths on it, to take away any grease build up.
Failing that, if you fancy a good arm work out over the chrsitmas holidays, then get some ZEBO, a couple of shoe brushes and plenty of newspaper for the floor. That is the traditional thing to use on cast iron fireplaces0 -
            Cheers Rusty,
It's had a load of paint on over the years by the looks of things. Had a go at them with the Nitromoors which looked to take one layer off. Since their going to be painted I think it's ok to go over them with the black.
If they were in the lounge or similar then I'd like to polish them up but it should be fine.
I did think of Hammerite but wasn't sure if they had a matt finish.
I have the whitespirits etc to wipe down prior to painting.
On the grill parts, should I use a red oxide primer then paint on it black?

Getting paint off cast iron is an exhausting process. If it was able to be removed from the wall, the easiest way would be to take it outside and use a wire brush drill attachment on it.
Cast iron has a silk look effect to it, not too glossy, so a silky hammerite should do if you can get it, otherwise the matt would look better as it is closer to original cast. There is nothing stopping you going over it with zebo afterwards, it will shine it up a bit more.
The fire bars for the basket, usually get very rusty, so wire brush them down, red oxide them and hammerite them too. You are lucky you still have the ashpan and bars. They were always the first to be thrown away.
This should do

It will take a bit of hard work, but will look good afterwards, put some flowers in the basket or some candles. Even some LED xmas lights bundled in there give a nice romantic glow in the bedroom.
Good luck0 -
            Thanks Rusty,
They are away from the wall but too heavy for me to get downstairs. The house is a renovation mess so should still be ok using the wire brush attachment I think with some good ventilation. I'll pick one up tomorrow I think together with that Hammerite. That was the one I was thinking of too.
Good call with the candles, you romantic you..
