My computer has seperate dvd and cd drives (E & F respectively) Cd drive is ok but the dvd drive won't play.
The dvd spins for a few seconds, light flashes and then nothing.
Computer came with InterVideo WindDVD pre-loaded. When I open it and click the on screen eject button the dvd tray opens and closes. But when I insert a dvd and press play nothing happens. If I right click and select drive I get an onscreen message "please insert a disc into drive E".
Media Player classic "cannot find DVD directory"
I've also downloaded videolan player but that didn't work
Device Manager and PCWizard both recognise the dvd drive and say it is working normally and latest drivers are installed.
Any ideas what I can try next?

Try a new IDE cable as that maybe duff, and make sure you have the Jumpers on the back of the drive set to slave or master respectively and not cable select.0

Your drive might not like this specific media, especially if it's a rewritable. See if it reads a pressed media. If it is a pressed media, try another one, this one might have a non-standard format.
If it doesn't play any pressed media, it sounds like the laser head is dead.0 -

I had a similar problem and bought a £10 head cleaner from Maplin, that didn't work so I went to my local market stall and 15 minutes later had a new Pioneer DVD writer fitted for £30 which is working fine.:hello:0
