Kindle and wifi signal

My OH's Kindle will only pick up a wifi signal if he is within about 20 feet of the router. It would be nice if could get a signal in other rooms to browse books:(

Do you think this is down to the router (Netgear quite a few years old) or the Kindle itself?

Is there a set distance from the router for picking up wifi?

Many thanks.

Ask a kindle toting pal to help you test?
My bet would be on the router but that would be guess as the kindles here work fine well past 20 feet.

Depends what is in the way within that 20 feet. Fresh air-fine. Solid masonry wall or foil lined plasterboard-much less chance.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Just the stairs (router is situated on upstairs landing where I have my computer) and a plasterboard wall - even leaving the door open doesn't help. My son can get a good signal in every room at his place.

Once you've downloaded the book you don't need WiFi to read it.

I know, it is just that it would be nice if he could browse from downstairs, but not the end of the world if he can't.

Smartphone with a wifi signal meter app and test the signal ,
Dont know if Kindle store has such an application but doubt it as its a book reader.

When I first got my Kindle hubby and I could be sat next to each other and books bought would come to his kindle quickly where mine could take hours if at all and I would have to go to my PC/Amazon account and say resend sometimes I had to do this several times before I received the book.
After a day or two I contacted Amazon and they took me through a reset of the kindle (you have to do a long button reset hold until they tell you when to let go), never had an issue since and even when in the next room the books come through quite quickly when wifi turned on to receive them (wifi only on for receiving and not whilst reading)
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

    Hi,

I have a Kindle Paper White 3G and a Netgear Router which is about four years old. I have no problem anywhere in my house. Router is in conservatory at the back of the house and my bedroom is at the front. No issues at all.

Have you tried other wifi devices to see if you get the same issue?

You could make sure the router firmware is up to date. As scary as it might sound, it shouldn't be too difficult with a netgear one. Just login to the router via your laptop/computer and there is an update firmware section.
You could also buy a second router and run a cable directly between the 2 and set the second one up with the same settings and it will just act as a signal booster.
