Epson printer cartridge issue

I have an Epson SX405 (with a built in scanner) and am aware of the current actions by Epson - attempting to con users into updating their firmware to ensure that only Epson cartridges are fully compatible...
This is a separate issue - I DO use "compatibles" - but, in the 4 years that I have had the printer for - I have never been able to replace just one cartridge - instead, it has always required all 4

This is not a concern when they cost £2.99 for a set - but if I was forced to spend £32 + on a set of genuine cartridges, I would not be very happy

Can anyone confirm whether cartridges should be replaceable individually ?

Yes, if that model has separate carts and not a tri-colour set.

I've always been able to change them individually on my Epsons. I have a c62 which must be about 12 years old and still works fine, and a c120 which is about 3 years old. I haven't had any issues with Epson updating the firmware, so my absurdly cheap compatibles still work.

But when I change one (say the black) - it then refuses to print anything, until I change the others !!
Is this just due to the non-original cartridges ?

I've got an epson sx115 and always had no problem using non compatible cheapo cartridges changing one colour at a time.

I have an Epson XP-305 and I seem to remember reading about this somewhere. Obviously it is something I would not want to do and am hoping there is not an auto update setting hidden away which would enable this to happen.

On my SX200 I can replace them individually and have it working but the others run out very shortly after so as they are so cheap I tend to just replace the lot when one goes. I don't print a lot but when I do I usually want it straight away and don't want to mess about changing ink cartridges.

I have the Epson SX445W and at last ink cartridge change it wouldn't let me continue due to non compatible cartridges but I wasn't using the pc to charge the ink I was using the printer itself.

so all I did was use the PC and the printer programme on it for the charging of the ink and everything worked fine

I have also just changed one cartridge at a time with no problems.
I haven't used Epson's own ink for yonks.

I download and reinstalled my drivers for the printer from Epson's site June this year so don't know about any updates and there is nothing on Epson's site for my printer either.
