Got all the household essential items to buy - how do I approach this task?

Hi guys,

I have to buy all the important household items to purchase for a new home. Things like:

Gas/Oven
Fridge
Washing Machine/Dryer
Sofa's
Beds
Dining table chairs

I have about £250 in vouchers available, and I know Christmas sales are coming up soon.

I am a bit overwhelmed with things since I moved home so not sure which is the best way to approach this.

Please could anyone share some advice :)

  • Buy fridge new, cooker/washing machine/dryer get off Ebay easily enough, same with dining table and chairs.

    Bed and sofa from Ikea.

I recently bought a dining table and chairs off ebay for £1.

Some time back i needed a freezer urgently. Managed to pickup a chest one for £30. About 6 years ago and its still going.

I picked up a cooker for a family member for nothing. They were having a new kitchen with built in appliances so just needed it moving.

You have £250 in vouchers? What vouchers? Where can you spend them?

    Hi guys,

Maybe I mis-presented my situation - I have more than £250, I can spend up to around £1k-1.5k on the household items.

Just don't know when or what is the best way to get cheapest deals for quality stuff. :)

Depends how much effort you want to make.

Ikea for most of it = easy.
Currys - White goods = easy but possibly more expensive.
I bought my washing machine from Argos, bed from Bensons for Beds.

You need to think what is most important. If you have a mattress and sleeping bag, then a bed isn't too much of importance.
Fridges / freezers need to be stood for 12 hours before turning on, factor this into your purchasing.

If you want cheap, look here for the local ebay sales, but the quality might not be the best.

    Lastly, SHOP AROUND.
Don't just get the first one you see as it won't always be the best.

Best go to currys and have a look at what your money gets you low end and high end stuff.

Then do some research on the net and get a short list of appliances.
Then go back to currys to work out your final choices and order from where u want.

You can get beds, table, chairs and sofas off freecycle which will do for the time being. In fact, all you need immediately is something to sit on when you watch TV, and something to sleep on. It took me several years before I got a table and chairs.

Some people have recommended Appliances Direct - never used them myself.

Yes, because TV is most important!

While it can be nice to relax at the end of the day, after watching people move in across the street having Sky put in the first day made me pity them... to think they couldn't even be a day without Sky. Some people seem to think you don't get TV without it.

    Life without sky TV ?

What a weird person you are considering such a thing, can't be normal lol.

Freegle and Freecycle can be a source of items but you will be competing against thousands of others to get them.

If your prepared to pay, you could always present a supplier with a list and bater a heavy discount.

To be fair, the point I was trying to illustrate is that you don't have to get everything immediately. Of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting to do so, or actually doing so - it's just that with some things like sofas and tables, you might not know what will fit in the new property, or what style you'd like to go for.

While you work this out, you can get the other things cheaply or free so that you don't make any expensive mistakes. If I'd bought sofas as soon as I moved into my present house, they wouldn't have fitted into the room or allowed free passage throughout the living room.
