Edge with box and infill with annuals and spring bulbs to form a parterre garden?

or keep the formality of box edging and then have exuberant in-fill planting

I would think about using things that you might not want to plant elsewhere in the garden because they spread and root or self-seed - Lamiums, Strawberries - cultivated or wild, Saponaria, Ivys, Sedums, some types of Campanula, Alchemilla mollis, Hypericum 'Hidcote', etc.
There's also a lot of lovely ground cover roses available now.
A mixture of colours of Aubretia tumbling over the wall will look lovely in the Spring.
Heathers and low-growing junipers will give an all-year-round display with very little work once they're established.
Choice of plants will partly depend on how much sun the area gets and how dry it is.0 -
