Natwest Select Account - Direct Debits

Hi, I've been having a few issues with Natwest and their charges and I'm hoping for a clarification.
I have a Natwest Select account with no overdraft facility. If I have a direct debit coming out of my account which would take my balance into a negative, should this payment be made or the direct debit returned unpaid?
Thanks

It should be returned and you should be charged as per the terms and condition of the account for the pleasure.
If they have paid one it is because you might have a 'shadow' limit and they think you are good for the overdraft - they might charge you for the overdraft but not for returning it - swings and roundabouts.
The only sure way to avoid bank charges is to make sure you have sufficient available funds in your account by the time the direct debits are taken from the account - or you cancel them before they are due and pay a different way.0 -
Consider:
1. Their "overdraft control" product
2. Getting an overdraft facility on the account
3. Ensuring cleared funds are in the account the working day before scheduled outgoing payments
4. Reading your T&Cs
...but not necessarily in that order.0 -
Thanks for the replies - I just noticed their overdraft control product last night.
My finances have been a mess for a while and as a result of that I've had a lot of charges (I understand about having money in the account or cancelling them it just hasn't happened a few times).
For the past few months they have been paying direct debits which have taken me into the overdraft. They are charges me £6 per day for doing this. I was charged £6 in October, £84 in November, £90 in December and I'm going to be charged £90 in January.0 -
