Hello
in our upstairs bathroom , the soil stack , or pipe , if thats what you call it , is tiled in behind some wall , when we empty the bath , it sort of taps , if that makes sense , like a continous tapping noise , should i be worried? or is it just `one of those things` ?
Cheers

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

its just the plastic expanding, when the warm water enters it.0

either that or you have some gremlins in there drowning and banging on the wall to get your attention.
Let them drown0 -
Just to bump this ......this ticking/tapping noise , seems to occur when any water gets released from the bath or sink , even if cold.....
any thoughts?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Could it be the air admittance valve at the top of the stack flapping about....?
Is it a regular rhythmic tapping, or random?0 -
hi googler
it`s regular rythmic and only ever when water has been released from the bath and/or tap , the noise never occurs otherwise (inc when flushing loo)
which confuses me now i say it, because doesnt bathw water drain into regular drainage , i.e seperate from human waste
Presumably (i will look again later) our water wastage from the bath and sink is routed to the soil stack as i do not have pipework outsode the bathroom on the back outside wallNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Two types of drain :
Rain water and Grey water.
Rain water is as it says on the tin, just that nothing else... these normally go into a soak away somewhere in the garden.
Grey water is water from Kitchens - utility rooms - bathrooms including toilet waste, these will go to the foul sewer in the road.
The tapping noise could be a few things, more likely than not just the pipework as said above contracting and expanding, it could also be a failed air admittance valve - nothing much to worry about, if you notice sewer smells from the area where the noise comes from then that really points to a failed AAV as it will be allowing the foul smells past the diaphragm. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful1 -
I assume you access the AAV by the very top of the soil stack (which is protuding from the roof) ?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

Yes ... if that's the one making the noise, some plumbers do install smaller AAV's on bath / sink waste pipes as well to stop the "gurgling".You may click thanks if you found my advice useful1
