Accessing credit score w/o credit card

Hey guys,

I only hold Santander's Basic account, I have no debit/credit cards or loans taken. I have had the account for 8 months and they still won't give me a proper Visa card because of my credit score. I go to bank every fortnight to deposit cheques and my salary ranges from 2k - 3k a month so bank workers are usually offering me to upgrade my account, yet, it gets declined when they run the credit check. I had an interview with Barclays today and the lady assured me that by looking at my circumstances I am guaranteed at least basic VISA, yet, again the same credit check story and it gets declined. I have applied to more than three debits cards throughout the year and recently to a credit card (to improve the score) as well, which I understand all contributes to having poor credit score. I also had a parking ticket which I failed to pay and it grew to £500, I have, of course, paid it off now. Do you think they might be holding old data about the unpaid fines on the credit report? Am I ever going to get a debit card? The worst is that I cannot register to any credit report sites, because I do not hold a debit card. How am I ever going to see/improve my score if I cannot access it? Sorry about all the text, I'm just really frustrated.

First things first, you don't have a (universal) credit score. You have a credit history, which lenders can see when they search your credit file. They will then derive their own 'score' for you.

So, forget paying out £14.99 or whatever (or even a free trial)...simply get your £2 statutory report from one or more CRA.

You'll find you can order this by post and pay with a postal order, for example...

Why do you get paid by cheque on a fortnightly basis. Why doesn't your employer pay your salary direct to the bank?
  • YorkshireBoy, I didn't know I can request credit report by post, but I will definitely do it tomorrow. Thanks!

Thrugelmir, I work for a British construction company and we all get paid by cheques. Lady at the bank asked me exactly the same question. I guess it saves company some money when they don't have to hire people to work with PayRoll.
