sorry couldnt resist it! soon to be fitting a new kitchen that currently has a real old nasty elec hob. Question is is it worth plumbing in gas to supply a gas hob (the meter is in the kitchen, but on the opposite wall) or would an electric one be just as good? Are ceramic ones as good as they claim? im a basic cook so my main aim is to be able to get by, just wondered pro's and con's on elec vs. gas?
cheers

well I would say definately gas........but then I've always hated electric cause it's just not as controllable as gas:D0

I'd also go for gas, far cheaper and economical than electric imo,

If you are used to electric then stay with that. I cant remember how many tea towels i burned in the first year or so of using a gas hob - not to mention saucepans
I know a lot of people say that gas is easier to control for cooking but Im forever turning things down too low and forgetting to turn the tap the right way so the gas is left on. I only have a gas hob because gas was there previously. Next time the kitchen gets done Im going back to lecky
My mum had ceramic and for the first few years it looked pretty good. Then it started to mark and even chipped in places. Not much faster then electric imho. You also have to make sure your pans are suitable for use on a ceramic hob0 -
My first cooker was gas, then electric that I hated to start with. When I had the chance of another gas hob I ended up with electric. Why? Because I've got used to ceramic hobs. IMO they're best because:
1) Easy to clean - REALLY easy compared to gas
2) Might not look as good as new after a few years (mine does more or less) but nor do gas hobs
3)You can get induction 'rings' that heat up quickly, cool down almost instantly so safer when kids are around
4) It's extra worktop space - in a small kitchen0 -
Gas may be cheaper to run, but you'll have to do an awful lot of cooking to repay the cost of geting the gas supply put in.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0

Definitely Gas - when I first tried Gas, I was very nervous about safety, but have since got used to it, and would never consider anything else now. I find it economical, responsive, and have never had a problem keeping the hob clean (even on the 25 yr old hand me down cooker I started on)."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

Which would YOU prefer?
I personally hate cooking on electric. I find it hard to control the temperature, it takes ages to heat up, not versatile enough for using the wok and I don't fel like I'm cooking 'properly' on an electric ring.
BUT.... I hated my electric oven so went and bought a gas one, now I wish I had electric again
If you're happy with electric then why change?Just run, run and keep on running!0
