If you were unable to travel because there was no service then I don't see why - weather or no weather - you should not receive a refund of the fare paid. You weren't delayed - you didn't travel

The return journey is less clear as to whether you could have made the journey or not. Did you have a return ticket or singles in each direction?

By all means apply for the refund, but the website does say no refunds for delays out of the control of SWT and specifically metions 'poor weather' so there is no guarantee of getting any money back.

Are we talking about a refund for an unused ticket, or compensation for a delay experienced to a journey that was made?

Since the booking form has a section called 'choose seats', what makes you think you can't reserve them?

still have both tickets - only use was to get across the Solent both ways but I asked to keep the tickets - and did. Apropos the weather - it wasn't my fault either! I think I know who to ask about that.

When you get to that page it will either skip it or tell you seats are not reservable for the particular journey

It's there for use when buying other company's tickets who do offer reservations

    Also: From SW trains FAQ

Seat reservations are not available on any of our services. You are free to choose a seat in the class of travel shown on your ticket.

I am confused. You want a refund for unused Portsmouth to Guildford tickets, which you used to cross the Solent? That doesn't make sense to me.

Can you clarify exactly which ticket(s) you held, and details of your planned journey and any journey you did make, and we'll be happy to advise.

You can reserved seats on any reservable service (subject to availability) however it is not possible to reserve seats on trains that do not offer reservations, such as trains on the Portsmouth - London routes.

    Hi
We are going down to Portsmouth early next year.
    We are going by train.
It appears unlike most other train companies you cannot reserve any type of seats on their trains-1st class or otherwise.
My question is are their trains busy? We would be travelling via Waterloo and it would be mid morning both ways, so not in the rush hour.
Neither of us our spring chickens so I would prefer not to stand .

You can also get a 'southern only' train from London Victoria to Portsmouth, might be quieter than going via Waterloo.

  • The Southern service is quite nice but it get quite crowded between Victoria and Gatwick, it will be cheaper than SWT if you can book in advance but it does take a bit longer.

May I suggest that you try it and then come back with your apology?
