Credit file incorrect

I hope someone can help. I have been declined for a mortgage with RBS today and I am puzzled as to why.

All the information on my credit file is up to date and paid on time. However, after I checked my report today with Equifax I can see an entry of my fathers on there for an old Virgin Media account.

Will this have caused my mortgage to be declined? The bank was happy with everything relating to employment and affordability but when it came to the credit check it was declined. I can only think this may be the problem. The only other thing is that I only have the latest 3 years on the electoral roll on there.

I hope someone can help..

    Hello there.

The first thing to do is to contact Virgin Media and highlight their error. Request that they remove the entry. They have a duty to ensure that they process data correctly, if they fail to help you could lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner. [ico.gov.uk]

In the meantime you could place a notice of correction on your file explaining why there is an issue - this is a small note of up to 200 words. A word of warning, though, we have heard that sometimes such a notice can cause issues in itself - mainly due to it potentially hindering the usual automated process of credit checking.

    Best wishes,

It may not be Virgin's error. Equifax make a habit of this whereby they don't check the data sufficiently and match the account against the wrong person.

Do you have the same initials as your dad or even same names? I know people get caused problems when they are named after their parents. I really don't think it even occurs to many parents to think what the impact will be on their kids of the names they place upon their children.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Notice of correction tends to mean that any credit you go for will get flagged for referral..

Does your parents have same initials to you?, if so then issue a notice of Disassociation - assuming that you have no active accounts held with your father..

The agencies have an online form where you can raise this via...

Yeah my middle name is my dads first name. I've sent evidence and virgin have agreed to remove it.

I've had a mortgage declined by RBS for some reason. Does anyone think this may be the reason?
