Thank you all for your replies. A combination of a wood burner and gas system sounds appealing to me as there's a plentiful supply of wood around here. Is a system like this much more expensive than your usual gas only system? Anybody here got such a system?

it will be more expensive as you'll have to buy a stove w/backboiler and you may want to put in a much bigger tank (or even separate storage tank) for the hot water.
If you have a cheap supply of wood (or if you just want the look/feel of a woodburner) then it makes sense to have one (and if you're having one it makes sense to tie it into a heating system!)

tbh I don't think you would save anything long term unless you have your own wood but it does give you a nice feature so it depends on where your priorities are
