This is the chuck I'm after, I rarely use power tools so I'm not too bothered about spending a lot on these. I understand that cheap chuck adapters might have centering issues but I'll just create a pilot hole using a cordless and let the drill bit find it's path on the power drill.

My drill is an SDS plus (the bits do have some room for play as they slide back and forth in the chuck.
Will I need this? http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Power%20Tool%20Accessories/Speciality%20Drills%20&%20Chucks/Chuck%20Adaptor/d80/sd1400/p12358
I'll take my drill with me and then inspect it at the counter before purchasing.
edit: just bought it and had a go, the shaft has some play and does not sit flush on the drill. But I think that's more to do with the sds chuck - they're not designed for accuracy and the regular sds bits do wobble anyway.
Pilot holes should sort the problem out. Carpendary bits do have a point centre so that should help a tonne.0
