Experience with burglar alarms? Specifically Scantronic 9448+? Oops...

The problems keep coming thick & fast :T Thankfully this one will be easily solvable & cheap compared to the others. It's just a case of knowing what you do.

Anyway, this is our burglar alarm control box on a normal day:

And this is it how it stands after todays episode:

So what happened?...

I had an early docs appt so went to the house, sorted a few things & went to leave. I entered in the alarm code as normal.

Instead of beep..beep..beep, it was just one long continuous beep. Had never heard of that before so i pressed the "omit" button to see if it'd cancel - nope. Pressed "enter" button, nope.

After 20-30seconds the alarm then started to sound.

Not knowing what to do to stop the noise, i cut the electricity to the house (thankfully i'd read where the switch was yesterday).

I waited 10 seconds or so, flicked it back on. Silence. Ahh. For a few seconds & then alarm again. I flicked it off as i was going to be late for my appointment.

Came back to the house, stepped through the front door & the alarm started beep..beep..beep as normal. Must be battery backup i thought.

I then noticed the red lights. Entered in the code as normal, it stopped as normal & i then turned the electricity back on.

The red lights are now still there. I daren't turn the bloody thing back on as i don't want that alarm to keep sounding off.

Have never worked with these before, so how do you put them right?

Is it just zones 1 and 6 lit? No tamper?

When was the battery last replaced?

If you turn the power back on do you get a sequence of beeps?

Did you key your user code in twice, the first one should disable the sounder, the second time will reset the trigger zones.
  • Just a guess but you may have part set it. Manuals for these are easy to find on the internet. Possibly you set the alarm but not zones 1 and 8.

    Iva started Dec 2018.
  • I saw the manual but i don't know what those red lights are.

    When was battery last replaced?
    1) No idea
    2) No idea where the battery even is

Those are the only lights lit.

The previous owner said they don't know/can't remember what zone is what room.

I know there's a sensor in the hall, a sensor in the living room, i think there's a sensor in the kitchen/diner & that's it. No sensors upstairs, so there's only 3 zones.

It sounds like the board has gone back to defaults.

If you are sure there are only 3 zones

1 Press 0 enter then 7890 (default engineers code) this get you into engineering
2 Press 15 enter this will show zones not used (the default is all zones on)
3 Press 4,5,6 these lights will go out
4 Press enter then 99 enter to exit engineering

    Then try setting the system

The battery is in the control unit, they cost about £10

If you don't know when the last time it was replaced (they should be replaced every 3-5 years) then its probably worth getting one and changing it.

If you are not electrically minded then turn off the power before taking the cover off to replace the battery, when you replace the cover and turn the power back on you should get a tamper alarm. Youll need to input your user code a few times to reset the tamper and the zones.
  • Thanks

I'll have a proper look around to see how many sensors i can see but i'm sure there's only 3.

What if though, for some strange reason, these sensors were programmed in to 4, 5, 6 instead of 1, 2, 3?

Also i didn't see anything about a 7890 code on the manual?? Do the other 3 numbers even need to be 'removed' if they're just not in use?

So if i just reenter the proper code it'll reset itself back to normal?

The 7890 code wont be in the user manual because its the default engineer code so its in the engineers manual.

If you open the cover up then you can see which sensors are wired into which input, the rest will be linked out (or should be), they wont have wires going into them but small metal links.

You should only have active zones set in the programming for zones that actually have sensors.

Have you tried putting the user code in twice as above?
  • Nope i've not actually been back to the house yet. I'm in later tonight as i'm meeting the Mrs in town.
