Because you instructed it to, or left the synching instruction active.

You can disable it in iTunes to stop it happening again.

Preferences>Devices, select 'prevent auto-sync'.

I somehow doubt they are lost, it's not the Apple way.


Have the photos loaded onto a computer with iTunes running perhaps ?


Do you use Google for contacts or the Apple system ?


On a Mac the contacts are probably merged into the Mail app. I can't immediately think where iTunes would put them on a Windows machine.
