Faulty laptop

Evening all,

Please can I ask for some advice?

Last weekend I bought an ex-display laptop from tesco and after looking over it before giving it to my son, I have found that it won't even power on.

It's been charged up for a couple of hours, the power button lights up, the fan starts, stops a few seconds later, restarts and stops again.

I'd like to know if tesco are required to replace the laptop with a working model of the same specification, or even a repair, or am I stuck with the option a refund only?

Thanks in advance

  • You can request a replacement or repair but you can't force Tesco to repair or replace if a refund would be cheaper for them. Also note that the laptop you bought wasn't new so I assume you got it for a discount from the full retail price. Swapping for a brand new laptop may be more expensive for Tesco than a refund.

Was it turned on and working when you saw it on display?

It may be worth trying an ATX reset, disconnect the power cord, take out the battery and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in, plug it in and turn it on.

I'm afraid it wasn't turned on and working when purchased, as it was boxed and in a display cabinet.

I've tried the ATX reset that you describe, I've re-seated the memory, and tested with an alternative HDD but to no avail.

I've just been onto the acer website and submitted a case for a warranty repair - lets hope that they come through :)

    I'll keep this thread updated
  • Did you even contact Tesco at all before going direct to Acer?

I've called the tesco electrical helpline number (printed on the receipt) and this just re-directs me to the acer helpline.

I didn't have time to hang around on the phone on a premium number, so submitted the case on the acer website instead.

If you need to ring again, have a look at Saynoto0870 for an alternative number.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Bad, bad move.

If there is any indication to Tesco or Acer that you've done this to the laptop, you may have much more of a fight on your hands than before, as you've almost certainly voided your Acer warranty...

    Why would that be?

It only took two screws to be removed, there are no seals broken (there aren't any to break).

Fine if that's the case... Not so fine if it isn't ;)
