Are there any makes or models which are more reliable than others?

I don't know, but if you're happy to mail-order it, satcure would be a good place to look. I've bought a variety of TV-related bits from them over the years.

Does it send an equal signal to both tvs from the amplifier?

Yes, I can't imagine why anyone would want unequal outputs.

Go for one with a high db gain and variable, if the signal becomes too strong could get ghosting. Slx are pretty good.

What you may find is there are several brands, but yet all have the same product with there own brand stamped on it
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j

remove the amp completely, it may not be needed, extra coax wiring for amps and splitters can cause interference, (as can loads of electrical wiring/kit alongside the coax), resulting in signal breakup.

then try box1 direct, no splitter, no amp. check signal strength and error rate and no of interference free channels after a rescan.

if that works, assuming tv1 has hdmi or scart, try antenna out from box 1 into antenna in to box 2. (this has the side effect that tv1 will only work via the humax, and not via it's own tuner)

depending on results, you may need to put the amp back in, either before the splitter, or after, or before or after humax box1

failing that, look at either a dual output amp, or getting the aerial erector back in
