Nationwide Query

Options
Hello,

I had a failed direct debit with virgin 2 weeks ago and on the same day that virgin requested the money (I didn't know about this as it was my first bill and no notification was sent to me via text alert which I asked for when my bill was ready) I cancelled my direct debit online and I thought from previous experience that the money would be refunded by the bank and any associated charges would show on my next bank statement but nearly 2 weeks on the money has not been credited back and the amount virgin tried to take is still showing as a minus on the account but yet virgin are saying my bill is outstanding so where is the money that is showing as a minus on the account?

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry but I don't have a clue what it is you've done or why. Could you try to rewrite it more clearly?

    Sorry about that.

Virgin have tried to take a direct debit of £15 and I did not have the money in the account on that date so this took me to minus £15.

On the same day I cancelled my direct debit online and from past experience when a direct debit has bounced, the bank will charge you but will take your account back to £0 and notify you of the bounced direct debit and associated charges.

After 2 weeks my account is still showing minus £15 but the virgin bill has not been paid neither has my account balance gone back to £0 so I am wondering why my account is still showing minus £15?

    Thanks
  • Are you sure it wasn't bank charges that took you to minus £15 and the amount is just a coincidence?

As SuperAllyB has mentioned, if your account was at £0 and you have no overdraft the fact that it is now £15 in the red is because Nationwide have charged you a £15 fee for an unpaid transaction, as laid down in their account charges for FlexAccounts and Cash Card accounts.
So the bill with Virgin is still showing as outstanding because it is, your £15 has gone paying Nationwide's charge, and Virgin haven't been paid.

If Virgin really failed to inform you about the date and/or the amount of the DD, call your bank, tell them this, quote the DD guarantee and demand the charge refunded.

No definitely not, the account is only a few weeks old and the direct debit is the first and only direct debit that is on the account and the minus is for the exact amount virgin tried to take so it would not be a coincidence.

I think nwide first write to you saying they will make a charge and when and then it appears usually a month later as a debit.

That's what happened to us when we overstepped our overdraft.

    And? This doesn't mean anything.
and the minus is for the exact amount virgin tried to take so it would not be a coincidence.
Why would it not? The "Fee for paid or unpaid transaction when you do not have enough cleared funds in your account" is exactly £15 for a Flexaccount.

Is the transaction listed as a DD in your full statement?
