Raising money Advice

Hello everyone, love these forums, always so helpful!

I had a question about Gift Aid, .what is it?
What has Gift Aid got to do with tax?

I was thinking of writing to some companies and asking for sponsorship. However, on forms i have as well as the BTMyDonate page, it talks about Gift aid and taxes. I wanted to be clear about this, before i email.

I am a visually impaired student trying to do something amazing, raise money , and i will climb Kilimanjaro to raise awareness. The trip will be funded by me, and everything else goes to charity.

I am part of a team aiming to raise donations for a charity group called Dig Deep, a fantastic charity who help provide clean water and sanitation for people in Africa. They are a small charity who do not use money for admin or advertising, so you wont of heard of them...that's my job :)

Also any advice on my campaign would be wonderful!

  • Also, if i may, this is my donation page. Any help would be appreciated, even if it's advice!

We are several events, got permission, didnt hassle people, stood in town with buckets for 18 hours, are doing marathons, are doing a virtual climb of kili, thats 10 hours of rock climbing, about 300 climbs., (a mission in itself)

doing sales, challenges, food competitions, bag pack, a cycle, mountain walk, also thinking of a lan party, bbq.

also thinking of doing a lotto, but not sure if it is worth it. I read it's allowed for charity in small one off occasions.

It works like this: I am a taxpayer, and I give £100 to a charity of my choice. The charity then asks me if I'd like to Gift Aid that amount. I say yes, provide my contact details and confirm I'm a taxpayer, and the charity reclaims £20 from HMRC, ie HMRC gives to the charity the tax I'd paid them on my £100.

If I were a higher rate taxpayer, I could then tell HMRC I'd given £100 under Gift Aid, and they'd refund some of my higher rate tax (because I effectively gave some of my income to charity so am not expected to pay more tax on that amount).

There are some other aspects to Gift Aid, but Dig Deep should be able to advise you on these if you need to know.

Generally, individuals make use of Gift Aid, I'm not sure what the tax advantages for companies making charitable donations are, but again, I expect Dig Deep can offer some help with this.

I cannot tell you how alarmed I am at the thought of a UK based charity sending money and resources to Africa without using any money for admin. Seriously, how do they do it? Bank charges, for starters, if they've found a bank who will do it for free do let us all know ... then there's their website to keep up and running.

A well run charity needs good admin. Often, good admin needs to be paid for, especially in the longer term. Please don't knock it.

A friend is trying to raise £2k for charity. Because he got a charity place through the London Marathon, he must raise a minimum.

He's not shaving his beard until the marathon and is doing a gig. All money raised from the gig goes towards the charity. Also sure he sold stuff on eBay too.
