British Gas to EDF - meter problem
Options
Folks, can I have a wee bit of advice from you?
I moved into this pensioner’s flat in July 2009 and on the morning of the moving-in date there was a strong smell of gas. An engineer was here in 10 minutes and replaced the meter. He felt that the folks who moved out the day before had perhaps damaged the old one as they transferred boxes etc out of the cupboard. On the new meter he put a yellow sticker showing the details of the old meter, its reading, the date and that the new one was starting at 00000.
Around a month later I had to do my first reading which was 00040. When the bill arrived it was almost £2000! Apart from almost giving this oldie a heart attack I could see the old meter’s reading had been used as the starting figure not 00000.
It took British Gas almost two years to get this fixed. Even the meter readers little handsets had not been updated and quarterly I was getting enormous bills. This was always fixed after a call to British Gas, plus a letter of complaint. They said that the engineer who replaced the meter had not let them know.
In 2011 my gas bills from BG started to show the new meter number. I thought it had all been fixed. Even when the meter readers came there was now no problem.
I’m in the process though of switching to EDF. On checking how the move has been going (I submitted the final meter readings, got the closing statements from British Gas and settled them) I see that the electricity supply is now live although the gas is still ‘nearly there’.
Unfortunately I see that my initial gas meter reading has disappeared (even though they did send it to British Gas) and the meter number now showing against the EDF gas entry is the old meter not the new one.
I called EDF last night and they told me not to worry and when the transfer is complete I have to call them and they will update the meter number.
Is it really as straight forward as that? I am worrying that I have to go through all the stress again and, as I’ve got older, I have difficulty dealing with this.
Thank you

As you have plenty (I assume) of documentation with actual readings on your new meter from British Gas it should be straightforward. There is no guarantee there will not be a hiccough or two and it may take more than a single iteration of correspondence to correct but don't worry unduly.0

Thank you very much Nada666. Yes, I tend to keep most paper docs and have all my gas bills from British Gas since moving in here. Tahnk goodness for the past 2 years or so they show the new meter number.0
