santander causing grief

Hello there, I am hoping that someone out there can help:
Basically, back in August (5th) we put an offer in for a 1 bed maisonette. A couple of days later and the offer was accepted. After months of nothing (many holidays booked off at work in anticipation), we finally had the date which was scheduled for the 6th of December. Browns who are my solicitors, intended to exchange and complete in the morning. After a frantic and damn right stressful week. Friday came around. The estate agent phoned me in the morning and confirmed it was all a go. On that note, we picked up the hire van. We munched some lunch and just before we cracked on with packing the van. I though I check my emails. Browns had emailed saying the house is off, they finally found out that the house was apparently under repossession. Completely gutted, I aired my frustration's with browns and that if santander wanted to sell, would they consider 7,000 less? Browns had got the confirmation from the vendors and all info was sent to the solicitors for santander. The last thing the solicitors requested was the memo random (not sure it's spelt like that) which was sent on the Friday the 13th. At this point browns had stated that now they have everything and likely that santander would be back in touch on Monday. It's now Tuesday and after many polite calls, santander had finally got back, but it's not good news. Apparently they want a full financial report off the vendors, which can take weeks for them to fill out with an equally lengthy decision from santander. What a load a babble (sorry)! I suppose my question is:
Has anyone had anything like this happen to them. If so what was the timescale? Also if anyone has any experience or knowledge on this matter?I would love to know. I really thought that we would be in before Christmas but now I know that's not the case. But would love to know when could expect to be in as we got jobs starting in January. Thanks
