  • Ok thanks for the help on that one. I just wanted to clarify if It was our blame or if i could get these admin fees of our back before I went and made a fool of myself. If we are to blame then I will ensure we sort it. Thanks for the help.
What was the cleared balance on the date the standing order was due to go out of the account?
Would it not be a good idea to set up a separate account for your rent?

The last day of November was a Saturday, so the standing order should have gone out on Monday 2nd December.

If the cleared balance on the 2nd December was sufficient to cover the Standing order, then it should have gone. Have you checked to see if the bank cancelled it in error?

If it was cancelled, then you'd have good reason to ask them for an ex-gratia payment to cover the £90 fees that the estate agent has hit you with.

    I don't understand this.

You noticed the SO didn't go out well within a week, and incurred a £30 charge.

Now you have £90 in charges.

Why didn't you just make a manual payment as soon as you noticed the payment had not been sent? Then cancelled the SO and setup a new one for the month after?

It seems that instead, you just kept "hoping" that the payment would be sent?

Would it not make sense to have another account dedicated for the rent? You just transfer into it when you get paid and thereafter it's "reserved" until the SO kicks in?

My guess is that one of them used a debit card over the weekend reducing the available balance to be short of what was required to pay the standing order.

OP, the responses are a bit mixed because you haven't clearly explained what's happened. I suggest you use bullet points to clarify what date the SO was due to go out, when the amount was changed, when the spend happened that reduced the available balance, and if there is any sign on your online banking that the SO was attempted but failed, and if so, when that happened.

Who sets up a standing order for a date that doesn't exist?

    Is it a direct debit?

Clarity is very thin on the ground here.

It's a good point, and I'm not sure whether SO systems would let you do this (more likely to let you choose last day of the month, although I don't use SOs much myself so I can't really say what options are available).

I suspect it's not a DD, a) because the OP couldn't change the amount, b) if it hadn't been taken on the due date that's the originator's fault, and c) surely nobody would be silly enough to allow a LA to have control of money coming out of their account!

looks like the best options for the OP are to setup a separate Bills account that each transfer into, that way all funds are only for those reasons - I never even take the card for that account out of the house..

Then have the standing order set to either the 28th or 1st that way there is never any misunderstanding of when it would be released - beyond where a weekend \ holiday falls..

You can set up a standing order for the 31st provided the month you want the payment to start has 31 days - otherwise it goes out on last working day of the month.

    Sorry but this is rubbish.
If a standing order is due to go out tomorrow you can amend it up to close of business today.
Standing orders now use the same payment method as faster payments.

Ah - you believe the hype? The 'method' it uses is immaterial. It all depends on the bank itself. CoOp (for example) takes 48hrs, Santander say 24hrs - your belief that it takes no time at all is not backed up as it is the Instruction that causes the difficulty - the fact is goes through FP is also nonsensical without the caveat that both payee and originator must be using banks that have signed up to FP.

Which then begs the question, why bother with a SO if you have access to FP? Or go the whole hog and they the payee control the amounts and dates with a DD. There's enough folk out there who cannot manage their finances responsibly use this as their last refuge.

That said, having no money in the account will usually prevent any DD or SO happening - which was the case here.
