Hi.. as far as I know as long as your car could be repaired (ie not so bad as to repair it would be dangerous) then you can insist on having it repaired..
Insurance companies will often write off a car if it is demeed uneconomical to be repaired.. ie cost more than they want to spend..
I would never take first offer.. look around take photo's of like for like cars that are for sale and tell them what you want...0 -
I have just received an offer for my damaged car from insurance company. I am going to phone them and accept it if they allow me to keep the salvage, as the damage is mostly the cost of a new door. I want to keep the car and organise the repair myself as it will be cheaper than the inflated quote given by the insurers nominated garage.
I have been told by a friend that the insurance will probably knock £100-200 off the offer if I keep the car.
My insurance sent me an actual cheque so i don't know if it's possible to haggle over the payout, actually I'm satisfied with the offer.
The paperwork they sent looks like they're not keen for my car not to be scrapped though.
My insurance say they look up the value of the vehicle in Glass's guide, which is a used car guide, can you not check your Galaxy? Or look up online in autotrader, etc and make your case for refusing the initial offer.
It used to be the case that you refuse the first offer and they come up with another, so I've been told, but my insurers are not doing that.
Good luck, it's a nightmare to sort out.0
