Sainbury's Bank Changing from Visa to Mastercard - Warning

Sainbury's bank are changing their Visa Card to a Mastercard.

My mum got a letter about 10days-2weeks ago informing her of this as her card expires at the end of July.

Today she logged onto Sainbury's Bank Online for something else and noticed that her Visa card account had been closed!!!

They have put on a section for her new card but she has not received it!!!

So she called them up and they said it has been sent and she should have it within the next 7 days.

They say they don't know why her Visa one has been closed already, they assumed she had.

Thankfully she has not used the card in the last few days but had she it could have been very embarassing!!! When she does her shopping with Sainbury's online everything automatically goes on this card so again she could have run into problems with that!!

It does mean that had she not had other cards she would have been credit card less too.

Just wanted to post and warn people as the same thing could happen to others who's cards are due to expire.

In fact I have one with Sainsbury's too which expires in August so I will be keeping a close eye on it.

  • After the date of the migration the Visa cards continues to work for 28 days, and the new card that is received should be valid from the beginning on July. So there isn't a problem, really...

In this case, the Visa a/c was probably 'closed' on 21st June, but as I say it continues to function for 28 days after that. You'll get the new Mastercard with plenty of time to spare, and just starting using that as soon as you get it.

    Thanks.

When you say it still functions is that for things that were already pending when it was closed? Or would it be ok if mum was to actually go into a shop tomorrow and use it?
  • Anything (whether it be pre or post migration) would still go through until the 28 days were up. So yes, your mum should be able to use the card in a shop tomorrow.

Well I just checked my account online to find Sainsbury's Bank have done exactly the same to me but they haven't even sent me a letter saying they are changing my Visa card to a Mastercard, only reason I know is because mum's already had hers changed.

So if they haven't sent me that letter goodness knows when I will get my new card.

    Not happy :(

Bearin in mind that there has been alot of disruption with post due to Royal Mail, not Sainsbury's. They are sending letters to everyone, if you haven't received it, you can't blame them. Like you said you Mum recieved hers, so why would they decide not to send you one.

I understand what you are saying about the mail but mum got her letter a long time before her card was due up to warn her things were changing. Mine should have been sent long before these latest strikes.
  • HBOS are changing all their cards to mastercard, the change makes no difference to you using it

but why would they send one customer one but not another? it is more likely that it has been intercepted, Post men throw away what looks like junk mail all the time to make their bags lighter, and their round quicker! It's a shame that our Postal Service is'nt as tight as we woud like it to be, but i suppose what do we expect if we only pay them £6 ph! lol.

  • I checked my sainsburys visa account today, noticed it had been closed and transferred to mastercard, phoned to find out when the mastercard would arrive. I was told I could no longer use the visa card as the account was closed. My new mastercard had just been posted 2ND CLASS and should take 7 to 10 working days. This is my only credit card, I go away tomorrow for a week and would always use this card for all holiday purchases. I am now left with no credit card, some holiday, and all the helpline would say it its an automated system, use another credit card they couldn't care less. Well this is one customer Sainsburys has just lost through poor service I'll close the account as soon as I can.
