Exam season is about to start a lot of secondary school parents are looking for tutors, and while I guess a lot depends on which area you live and what your subject skills are the rates seem quite interesting.. here in the south east £25/hour + £3 travel.


There are a number of tuition agencies.. give them a shout get on their books and go for it..

You're going to need to give us some more to work with... what type of jobs did you get interviews for? What area of research are you in?

I made the leap from science before I got too entrenched (I was a Research Fellow without a PhD) and I've not looked back. Have you looked into consultancy project management? There are specialist employment companies that take on scientists looking for work

What makes you say your unprepared for the world outside academia?, remember that academia is a business, have you ever worked on any academic IPR/Academic transfer projects?



The skills you have developed in academia could be very useful in the commercial world especially your research skills, project manager and Business analyst contract jobs spring to mind.

I guess it just seems a bit of a pipedream. Writing that is. I have started the novel - its not just a mythical being - but you know how it is. People expect you to stop dreaming and get a real job. lol

I live in London so demand for tutors are high - although I imagine it would take a while to establish myself

It's a social network for business people. It's used a lot by recruitment agents to find the right people - and you can also use it yourself for job hunting. I met a parent at my son's nursery, who had been out of work for a year - pointed him towards Linkedin and he had a job by the end of the week (in the right area of work). It is an exceptionally powerful tool.

Typically, it may involve travelling to clients. The good thing is, it pays quite well too and there's always need for good project managers in it.

PRINCE2 is a project management process that you need to take exams to qualify in (and there's a few different levels). If you want to work in the civil service or NHS they might require it.

(I work in healthcare IT consultancy now after working for a few years a bioinformaticist)

For a PM job then Prince 2 is pretty much a must have.

You may get lucky and find somewhere willing to take you on without it but it is pretty much the industry standard.
