Gitdogs latest attempt to give me a heart attack.

I was a bit careless swapping hands with the lead, and he pulled away and took off down the pavement like a bullet out of a gun.
All that was going through my head was a) I didn't know he could move that fast, b) if he goes round that corner there's a dual carriage way, c) if he avoids the traffic and keeps going at that speed he'll be miles away in minutes and I'll never see him again and d) if he's excited he's likely to jump at someone to say hello, they'll panic and I'll be done under the dangerous dogs act. All in about 5 seconds. I was petrified.
Gitdog stops at the corner and looks back at me calling to him. It's written all over his face he ain't coming back. Then I remember the trainer last week saying "whatever you do, don't chase them" so in desperation I take off at speed back the way I came.
And !!!!!! me it worked. The downside was he stopped two feet away, turned and legged it again, so I keep running away and the second time I manage to grab him.
Never again, I tell you. Next time we're going out with two collars, harness and at least 3 leads. Haven't been so scared and so relieved in a long time. And the trainer has earned her money for that tip alone.
Thought I'd share in case it helps anyone else.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

roflmao - after watching my OH chase meg (our springer spaniel) round a local pond trying unsuccessfully to catch her), I shared this secret with him! make it a game that SHE is trying to catch YOU!
NICE ONE Elsien!
I do love Gitdog! the joys of ownership eh?0 -
Well he got every bit of sausage in my pocket as a reward for "coming back-ish" because I was just so relieved.
However as he's just tipped my cider all over the floor in a strop because I wouldn't let him have my dinner, he's back in the bad books again already. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Well done on the quick thinking!0

Is it wrong as a cat owner I laughed loudly at both the name and antics?
PS Madam Noo real name Ninja (anything but) just about took my finger off for a Felix treat - the equivalent to Pringles for Humans I believe. Finger still throbbing, cat now asleep on my knee refusing all attempts at eviction.0 -
I love the name too - Gitdog! Really is a git!

ROFLMAO - Barney (my cat) loves Dreamies - but his real fave is the Webbox beef flavour treat sticks. his party trick is to swallow them whole! its a bit like watching a sword swallower!!!!!!!!!0 -
That is a trick I use often! Not necessarily well enough to be able to catch him, but enough to get him away from whatever it is he was running towards.
Well done on defying all instinct to chase though, it does take some courage to run away from whatever you are trying to save your pooch from!0 -
Elsien, If just running away doesn't work you need to shout excitedly and wave your arms about like an escaped lunatic
