LED light bulbs as an alternative to energy savers?

I like LED lighting so i'm going to get a bulb to try out in a room to see how we get on. The house is currently fully kitted with your standard energy saving bulbs.

I've pulled one out of the box room which i will use as the PC room. The stamping on it states:

Phillips Genie 11w
Energy Saver
230-240v
50-60Hz

And that's yer lot.

Looking at the end i'm not sure whether it's a B15 or a B22. I've done some measuring to see if i can find 15mm or 22mm. Measuring the black base is 17mm, but measuring from the beginning of one pin across to the beginning of another is just about 22mm, so i'm guessing that'll make this a B22.

On that note...

I was looking here: http://www.ledhut.co.uk/led-bulbs/b22-led-bulbs.html Especially as you get over 12% cashback through TCB, plus through a referral there's an additional £15 on offer.

It looks like the range is from 3.8w up to 10w. Still shy of 11w that the energy saver mentioned.
But is an 11w LED bulb the same as an 11w energy saver is what i'm wondering? I'm an electrical dummy.

While i love the cool white light, it's not practical for room lighting, so it'll have to be more natural.

I don't like the Phillips only coming with 1yr warranty -vs- the others at 5yrs, so i'd be inclined to go with the LumiLife ones.

So, what are we actually looking at as far as LED lighting goes?

This is for a box room as i say, so it's quite small. I imagine the wide beam isn't as important as if we had LED lighting in the reasonably large living room.

To summarise - i'm not really sure which to buy.:rotfl:

There are a few useful threads on here about LED bulbs ... make a brew and dig in.

The 11W quoted for the energy saver (let's call it a CFL - compact fluorescent light) is the amount of electric it uses. That range you see of 3.8-11W for the LEDs is, again, the amount of electric used. Nothing to do with the light output. CFLs and LEDs will therefore usually state an equivalent incandescent figure ie, this bulb will put out the same light as a 60W 'old style' bulb. Sometimes these can be a bit exaggerated. Not so much for CFLs, but a lot for LEDs!
Your 11W CFL will be putting out the same as, maybe, a 40W bulb - example here:
    http://www.screwfix.com/p/gls-style-energy-saving-es-11w-cfl/84391
That example also quotes 440 lumens. Lumens is the measurement of light output, and is much more relevant, and harder to cheat, than the Wattage equivalent.
On the site you link to, the 3.8W light puts out 250lm, the 5W one puts out 410lm and the Phillips one puts out 350lm.
The 7W bulb at this site is brighter and cheaper, and if you use the discount code MSE20 you can have 20% off it!

  • I learned late last night that the wattage is the power consumption.

I do wonder if 640-650 lumens (the one you mention) is possibly TOO bright. ATEOTD this tester is just for a box bedroom which is where my PC will be. I don't mind bright but i don't want to be blinded.

I wonder about the brightness of the living room & kitchen. I think perhaps certainly the kitchen should be bright.

Then there's the outside lights which most certainly need to be super bright.

The living room bulb holders are a bit stupid though. No idea why the previous owner had this setup - they point the bulbs up towards the ceiling as opposed to down towards the floor. The living room is quite long too & all you have is 3 bulbs in the centre of the room pointing upwards. I would've thought there'd be 2 sets 1-third of the way in from each end.
