iPad 2 - partially installed app

I went to the app store via the iPad, and selected ISS Spotter, a tracker for the ISS.
The installation process hasn't put an icon on the home screen, so I can't open the app from there.
Inspecting the Purchase History at the app store, I can't install it again, because it now has an 'Open' icon as opposed to an 'install' icon. Pressing Open has no effect.
In settings, it shows up in the list of apps at the foot of the settings menu, but there's nothing available here to start, install or uninstall it. I seem to be trapped at a partial install stage, with no way out.
Suggestions?

...which is what I was alluding to , but I was in a bit of a rush sorry for not being more specific, I too keep nothing useful on the ipad, it's a convenience tool for me and if anything useful pops along when using it I use dropbox and iCloud to make sure I have it somewhere more useful.Enfieldian wrote: »iTunes backup/restore......
