It looks like I will be asked to have a look at a laptop that shuts down when say a usb memory stick is plugged in (she says its a virus). I know its a bit sketchy but are there any programs I could stick on a usb drive to try and sort it out. I was thinking of malwarebytes and super anti spyware but are there others I could use instead or as well as the 2 mentioned.

Thanks in advance

Depends what you're trying to get rid of, but I've used Hitmanpro on a USB stick to clean up a machine with the "police" virus on it.
You just need to make sure the laptop can boot off the USB stick if taking that approach, although there are bootable CD images you can also obtain. Kaspersky do a free one I think.

People who know nothng about computers call every little thing that goes wrong with them a virus. One guy I knew said the noise of the hard drive spinning on an older mac was a virus.

My bet is usb port is broken or usb card is broken.

As above. It'll not be a virus or any other malware.
