Ideas for a family friendly New Years eve on a Budget

Hi
I know most people will be thinking about christmas first but...
I was wondering if anyone could make some suggestions for a family and budget friendly new years eve.
We are hosting this year for family only, there will be approx 6 children aged 2-12 (the younger ones will be going to bed before midnight) and the adults range from in the 20's to 80's.
I need ideas for activites that can involve everyone at some point to pass the time until midnight and what to eat and drink.
I thought a couple of punches would be a good idea, one alcoholic and one not.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

I like the punch idea! So simple to make too, this one looks good

There are a lot of ideas on that site too!
For games, what about charades? Something that can be played probably from about 5 years and over, presumably the younger children will have toys with them etc to play with? Charades is always fun though!
Maybe some board games later for the adults? A game of Twister even! Or do you have any game consoles? I personally love a Wii party with a group of friends and some drinks. Wii sports or one of the dancing games for example.0 -
Can you get the older children to put together a "performance" during the earlier part of the session? Then entertain the older folk?
Anyone able to play musical instruments? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Great thanks!! I bet punch will be quite cheap to make in large amounts as you can bulk it out with juices and mixers etc but it feels like there is a lot to drink.
Charades is good, Im wondering whether to go for the super organised 'monica from friends' style activities or just sort of go with the flow.
Hmmmm not sure twister would go down very well with the older generations! We have a xbox kinect so we could maybe use that, hadnt even thought about it - thanks!0 -

This is certainly something i would have done with family of the same age as a child, in fact i remember vividly the renditions of various abba songs and whole chunks of acting out the sound of music! However thinking about the children that are going to be there it might be a bit difficult to persuade them!0 -
One game which children have been found to be very good at and often outthink adults.
10 lengths of uncooked long spaghetti, one marshmallow, 1m of string and 1m of sellotape per team. Prize for whichever team makes the highest tower with the marshmallow on top.
Another from my childhood.
Chair in middle of room with a table. Coat, Gloves, hat, scarf on the chair, knife and fork and a 200g bar of dairy milk on table.
Shake dice whoever throws a six dresses starts dressing in the clothing then uses the knife and fork to open and eat the chocolate. Their turn ends when the next six is thrown.0 -
we play a game called tip it when we have families around at xmas , basically you have 2 teams sitting at the table , one team has a penny , this team then puts all their hands under the table and the penny is then smuggled to one member , then all hands are then put on the table and one member of the opposite team has to guess who has the coin either by asking a person to "away"/open a hand , you can then narrow it down and then "tip it" the hand you think has the coin
if the coin is found then it is given to the guessing team ,0 -

For the last 5 years or so, we have gone to my parent's for New Years eve. We would provide our own alcohol, cook food for the buffet and for entertainment, put CD's on and dance and talk the night away.
We didn't do party games, not our cup of tea and it would make me feel so eek if I ever went to a party that did!
This year, I am off out to the pub for the first time in a decade to watch a friend in a rock band...the boys are still going to the parent's house. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I had completely forgotten about this one. It's hysterical watching everyone get the clothes on as quickly as possible only to be stopped before they've picked up the knife and fork!!
I just might introduce my family to this one :j:T:rotfl:0 -
We have some wind-up little reindeer and have a few races with them - the winners get prizes.
Those prizes are always silly dressing up items from the pound shop - cowboy hats, fake crooked teeth, Dame Edna type glasses, moustaches etc.
Then for the next hour people just love trying the bits on and sharing them around... some of my favourite photos of past years have been those moments.:hello:0
