Hi All,

I'm looking to add some raised beds and a compost bin to the garden, and was wondering where the best (cheapest?) place to get the wood from was in your opinion? Any mega deals out there?

Old scaffold boards if you can get them.

I use a local timber yard. I don't know how high you want to make the beds but have found their 6" x 1" treated boards just right for me. They come in 14' lengths and the yard cuts them up to my precise requirements at no extra cost.

With any luck you shouldn't have to spend anything on a compost bin. You can probably pick up 4 wooden pallets for free from your local builders merchant and then all you have to do is nail them together.

The Ebay one is exactly what I had in mind, although with the spirit of MSE thought I must be able to get the materials for cheaper than that and make it myself - so was aiming to find the best price. Like the idea of old scaffold boards.

I would recommend the Wood Recycling projects across the UK. They are in places like Glasgow, Brighton, Bristol etc. Generally they sell scaffold planks and also made up raised beds. They are all (I think) community interest companies so well worth a look.
