Could you not approach the vendors and ask them if they would mind you putting your 'new address' on the school application if you've not completed by that date?

Don't do it. If found out you could end up with no school place.

    great post from Sonastin
I too had the same experience. Vendor said they were downsizing and would rent if required. their purchase fell through, in the meantime a property 2 doors down from them came on the market and was a lady moving into sheltered housing by a set date so she was the one on a timetable. However, (stupidly) I felt morally obliged to stick with my original vendor and I got lodgings myself (work relocation) in the meantime. The vendor became silent so via the EA I enquired about their offer to go into rented. 24 hours later the EA came back to say the vendor was taking the property off the market and was no longer moving at all.
So 3 months after moving into lodgings I was back to square one. In the meantime the old lady's house (which I did go and view) had sold and completed for less than I offered on the other place ... never believe anything a vendor says !
