Hi All
I was just talking with a nice old lady on my daily dog walk and she asked me whether it would save her any money if she turned a couple of generally unused radiators off in her house, I was not sure so I said I would ask a couple of questions for her on here and see what we could find out.
So will turning off some radiators save money? And does turning the room thermostat up and down affect the amount of energy used/money spent?
Any advice on this or other energy saving tips would be great before the weather turns much colder.
Thanks in advance peeps!

Yes - if you turn a radiator off then it's not producing heat so it will save money. Likewise if you turn the thermostat down then the room wont get so warm and the boiler wont need to work so hard.
However make sure that the unheated rooms get ventilated otherwise there's a possibility of damp & mould if they get too cold. Also be careful that the temperature isn't turned down so low in the living rooms that she gets cold - try turning it down a degree or two just so that she is comfortable. She should also make sure that the timers are set properly so that the heating and hot water are only on when she needs them rather than all the timeNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Is this a wind up?
The higher the set temp on the 'stat, the more gas is burned, and the higher the bills. What did you otherwise think the 'stat was for?
Turning off rads in unused rooms reduces the heat output and so uses less gas.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
